To cover the side of the box, you must first determine the the circumference of the box opening. Either use a tape measure, wrapped carefully around the perimeter of the opening,
The hatbox room may be constructed from either an unfinished paper mache hatbox or a purchased, finished hatbox that has an inside lining which is either a solid color or has a print which is in scale. The box will need to be at least 12 inches in diameter in order for it to work well in one inch scale, but it may be larger. You will also need a piece of 3/16” foam core - for the minimum sized box it would need to be approximately 12” x 24”.
You will also require one or two wallpapers for the unfinished box. The paper lining the box should be in scale. The one covering the exterior of the box may have a larger pattern, if you wish. For the outside of the minimum sized box, you need a standard width of wallpaper measuring about six feet in length.
If you are using a finished box, you will need enough of a harmonizing paper to cover the foamcore walls.(about one foot). For either type of box you will also need a floor covering material measuring at least 10”x12”. This may be a velvet, velour, or velveteen fabric or a suede or flocked paper. Any visibly napped fabric or paper - that will give the in-scale appearance of a carpet, may be used.
The paper mache boxes you buy in craft stores are generally handmade and therefore, no two are precisely alike. Because of this, it is necessary to fit each part of your project to the individual box.
To cover the side of the box, you must first determine the the circumference of the box opening. Either use a tape measure, wrapped carefully around the perimeter of the opening,
or calculate the circumference by multiplying the diameter of the box by the constant pi (3.14) Add one inch to this measurement to determine the length you must cut the paper that will be covering the outside of your box.
Measure the box depth and add 1-1/2” to get the width of the paper for the outside of the box..
From the paper that you have chosen for the exterior of the box, cut a long rectangular piece measuring the circumference of the box (3.14 x the diameter) plus one inch, by the depth of the box plus one and one half inches. Measure ¾” from each long edge, and using a yardstick, draw a line parallel to the edge on the wrong side of the paper
